The Challenge
To create a kitchen that felt connected to both the garden and adjoining dining room, bringing the three spaces together while making busy family life easier.
The design needed to incorporate a small eating area for children and ensure everything was organised and easy to use day to day as the back door is a main entry way into the house.
It also needed to introduce more light, character, warmth and colour to balance the industrial stainless steel app, dark flooring and worktops.
Bring colour in with accessories
Use accessories to bring colour and personality into your kitchen. They’re easy and relatively inexpensive to update, so you can change things around without committing to a whole new scheme.
Open up the view
If you can, café-style windows that open onto an outside space create a brilliant connection between indoors and out. They draw your eye into the garden, let in air and light, and make it much easier to chat or pass things through when you’re outside.
Only keep what you actually like
Those plates, bowls and glasses that always get pushed to the back of the cupboard? You probably don’t need them. Keep the things you genuinely enjoy using and free up valuable cupboard space in the process.
Create a mini utility zone
You don’t need a utility room to have a utility zone. One well-organised kitchen cupboard can hold everything you need, keeping practical bits together and easy to grab without taking over the kitchen.
Find a faithful kitchen stool
Every kitchen needs a good stool! Choose one you love and you’ll keep it for decades. Sit on it, stand on it, move it inside or outside — it’s one of those simple, hardworking pieces you’ll use all the time.
Add light where you need it
Rechargeable lamps are brilliant for darker corners, particularly near windows on gloomy mornings and winter evenings. No wiring required, and you can move them around whenever you need an extra pool of light.
