The Challenge
To breathe new life into a dated bathroom that felt tired and had become dominated by children’s toys.
With a full renovation and costly new tiles and shower off the table, the focus was on making clever changes to transform the space without replacing everything.
The bathroom needed to work for both adults and children, creating a space that felt relaxing and fun, while being practical, organised and easy to keep clean.
Make the most of a small sink
A simple wall cupboard keeps toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap from cluttering a small sink. Choose one that also gives you space to display a favourite photo or picture, and paint it to match the walls or scheme for a more considered, built-in feel.
Don’t be afraid to hang things on tiles
Shelves, pictures and mirrors can all be fixed to tiled walls, provided they’re positioned safely away from wet areas. If your tiles are fairly plain, it’s an easy way to add interest and personality without the expense and upheaval of replacing them.
Put a map in the bathroom
Bathrooms are brilliant places for maps. There’s plenty of time for conversations, learning and worldly thoughts while soaking in the bath, brushing teeth or simply escaping the family for five minutes! Dream of the places you’ll go!
Keep cleaning products close by
Store your everyday cleaning products together in a caddy somewhere in the bathroom — particularly if it’s upstairs. Having everything to hand makes it much easier to give the room a quick clean whenever you have five minutes.
Make spare bathroom space work harder
If you’re lucky enough to have extra storage space in your bathroom, don’t waste it. Use it for overflowing sports kits, seasonal clothes, spare linen or towels — anything that needs a home but doesn’t need to take up valuable space elsewhere.
